Winter tires in a summer climate

We all know that you’re not supposed to run summer tires in winter, but what about winter tires in summer?

Kinja'd!!!

I noticed these tires on a coworkers car in the parking lot this morning. For those of you who don’t know, I live in South Carolina. After a cursory internet search, it seems like increased tread wear and decreased performance were main downsides. So, people of oppo, how bad is this?

mostly it’s fine. faster wear on the tyres is common.  but unlike the opposite, they still work fine as a tyre.

Significantly reduced traction probably due to operating outside of ideal parameters for the rubber compound, probably road noise if i had to guess, thats prob about it. Thats my uneducated guess

They feel squishy when it's hot, and they will wear them out crazy fast but other than that

I used winters one summer, when my summers were worn out, but I wasn’t driving enough to justify getting a new set then. It was fine. They were a bit noisier than the summers, and I assume they wore faster, but handling and braking were good (honestly I’d say better than the pricey new all-seasons I eventually got).

Why do you even need winter tires in South Carolina in the first place?

Did it for a summer on the E46 (with the performance oriented blizzaks of the time) . Riding on marshmallows...not dangerous but def not fun.

As long as they don’t have metal studs it’s just a squishy feel when driving, and accelerated tread wear . I had the blizzaks taken off our Outback 2 weeks ago and the difference was apparent but not like “oh my god”.

I still have my snow tires on, because I’m poor and can’t afford another set of tires. When its warm, my top speed is only 120 kph. at 122 kph I can feel the tires start to get all wishy washy for lack of better term. And at any speed when its warm, they feel like the grip is inconsistent, and it feels like the sidewalls are rolling over on themselves. They aren’t, the tread pattern bending, and sliding makes it feel that way. Surprisingly, treadwear has been minimal, and only somewhere around .5-1.5 mpg difference from the old set of worn ass summer tires I had.

From my experience it really ruins the handling. Only reason why I did this is because the winters weren’t actually that good at winter, and needed replacement before the next winter anyway. It was on an Accent as well.

Part of me thought that I’d end up with supersoft tires that grip extra. I think they were much softer, but it just ended up giving a strange, floaty feeling to the handling and felt like it had less peak grip. Moving from a standstill would frequently result in the front tires scrambling to find grip before locking into the asphalt.

I only changed the tires on my Forte5 earlier this month and the feeling was the same, even though I have much better winter tires than I had on my Accent (currently running Michelin X-Ice tires vs. Hankook somethings on my old car). I felt very much the same things. The tires would squeal when I’d make turns in my underground parking garage, and that’s at 10-20km/h, and would squeal when trying to accelerate hard from zero. These are all behaviours that disappear with my OEM all seasons, there’d probably be an even greater disparity if I used performance summer tires.

Increased stopping distance compared to all-season because of the "chunkyness" of the tread blocks.

Significantly more wear. My boss always leaves the winters on the delivery cars Untill they’re toast. The ones on the car I use were bald 2 weeks ago. They were new in December. Maybe 20,000 miles on them.

However I kept winters on my galant Vr-4 year round, but it only got Driven  like 2,000 miles a year anyway... and I spent a lot of those miles on dirt/sandy roads so a knobbier tire wasn’t a bad thing.

Gotta admit, still haven’t switched out the winter tires on the wife’s Outback. Don’t know if I will bother this year. Don’t have dedicated wheels, so means going to a tire shop and paying to have it done, and then switch back in the fall...so that’s about $160 total (plus hours of waiting around/dealing with idiots at a tire shop) and we’re barely driving the car so far this year with the shutdowns. I filled up the gas tank in early March, it is still more than 3/4 full .

It’s been a really mild spring too...when summer comes forreallz out here in the PNW yeah they’ll be super squishy but don’t expect they’ll get much use (will just use the Bolt instead because lease + cheaper).

Even with more use than expected, the $160 in savings will probably make up for whatever increased wear it results in.

They are using a softer compound that does not like to heat up (so they are deteriorating quite fast in the summer), have micro-grooves that makes lateral grip less precise :

Kinja'd!!!

Their pattern also are usually worse for the fuel economy and road noise.

I remember losing the rear on a roundabout on my mother FWD car with pretty tired winter tires in the summer, it lost the grip quite brutally but fortunately it was a large roundabout and there was no car next to me :)

It is like throwing money away.

It isn’t instant or drastic as “the forums” will tell you, but the winter tires are softer. There is no danger level I can imagine as there is with summer tires in winter, like your not going to spin out because you have winter tires in 90 degrees.

Besides wearing the tires out in just one summer, the grip can be pretty good, soft tires ...

Admittedly, I’m still on winters as my local shop hasn’ t had room for an alignment and I’ve just been lazy and don’t want to do it in my uneven, dirt driveway and risk another car crushing my head.

No real difference oth er than it feels a bit soft in the turns and the tires seem to have a slightly louder drone. But then again, I don’t drive it too aggressively on winters so I’m sure if I tried to go through turns fast I’d notice more.

Thanks to Covid, many tire places are not running...also owner might be extra hesitant of going to a tire shop to swap em out.

My sister had winter tires on her car. She was also home all this time so she felt no urge to swap the tires out. Did recently tho since places are re-opening

Dear mom
Everyone is so nice here. One fella came by to tell me about these new type of tires on the market. Apparently you can use them all season long.

I don’t know if you want me to ship you these old tires back or what.

I ran my Yokohama snows for one summer they were at end of life so I thought I would burn them off.  Horrible handling wore out rather quickly 30% tread left gone by September.  Very surprising in the rain as far as handling.  Overall they just move around a lot on the tread blocks and you can feel it.  I don’t recommend this at all.  Stick will all season or go to a Nokian WR G4.  My 2 cents.

While obviously not as good as all-season (or summer) tires, traction isn’t that much worse for most driving situations. Other than noise (and primarily wear) your average driver will probably not notice the difference. I swap between snow and summer-only tires on my Boxster and you really need to be aggressive to get it to lose traction compared to the summer rubber. I imagine the difference between all-seasons is even less.

It’s not the best thing to do, given the problems you mention, the shorter tread life and shit.

But it’s better to use winter tires in the summer than to use summer tires in the winter. Su mmer tires turn to glass at low temperatures, and the tread could even crack, whereas winter tires will just wear really fast when hot (if it gets really hot, some winter tires could even have chunks flying off)

Winters are made to stay soft in cold weather, so other than just faster wear in warmer weather.
